My yoga journey began when I was twenty one, and right from the beginning I loved it. Hatha yoga is the yoga of movement, but when you practice yoga, as well as moving your body in ways to gently increase strength and flexibility, you do so much more. Some alchemy happens as you combine movement with breathing and focused concentration that increases self-awareness, and soothes the mind and soul, nurturing on many levels. That was certainly my experience. For many years I practiced once a week, and found this regular practice to be a beautiful way of gently maintaining body, mind and soul. Over the years a weekly yoga class gave me a chance to gather myself, to come home to myself, connecting to something that’s hard to define but feels calm and peaceful, and part of something larger.
I’ve been blessed to be guided by some wonderful teachers on my yoga journey. My first teacher, Diane Canavan in Jersey in the Channel Islands, once said that yoga will mean different things to you at different times in your life. At the time I didn’t know what she meant, but I’ve come to understand over my years of practice…
As a young woman with a busy job in the finance sector, I enjoyed moving and stretching after long days at a desk, and appreciated the way that yoga acknowledged other layers and aspects of ourselves.
Through pregnancies and then early motherhood my yoga practice became a place of delicious, quiet, restful time just for me.
In the years of our family growing there was the busy-ness of family life to co-ordinate and organise, as well as running businesses, and moving from the UK to New Zealand. During this time yoga practice provided a chance to give myself some attention, and to fill my own cup.
And somewhere along this journey the desire to know more about the practices of yoga and to share it grew, and so I trained to be a yoga teacher. I completed a comprehensive eighteen month teaching diploma course with the International Yoga Teachers’ Association (NZ) Inc. On this excellent course you’re guided to deepen your own practice, integrating it into your life, and sharing with others. Now I’m privileged to be an assessor on this course.
I love sharing the many beautiful wellbeing skills contained in yoga, and thread the wisdom and knowledge of the Mohan family (Svastha) through my yoga offerings through ongoing mentorship on the Svastha Yoga Therapy Program.
Thank you for your interest in the yoga I offer.
